The annual J. B. Jackson Book Prize, sponsored by the Landscape Studies Institute at the Center for Cultural Landscapes, is awarded to publications which exemplify novel perspectives and methodological approaches in the field of landscape studies. This year, the award jury selected City of Wood: San Francisco and the Architecture of the Redwood Lumber Industry by James Michael Buckley. They also chose two finalists, Dark Agoras: Insurgent Black Social Life and Politics of Place by J.T. Roane, and the anthology Empty Pedestals: Countering Confederate Narratives through Public Design, edited by Kofi Boone and M. Elen Deming.

The jury has awarded a Special Commendation to Thaïsa Way, Director of Dumbarton Garden and Landscape Studies, for her extensive publication history and her contributions to the field of landscape studies during her tenure at Dumbarton Oaks.

Roane and Way are both advisors to the Out(sider) Preservation Initiative. We are excited to see that their individual accomplishments have been recognized by this year’s J. B. Jackson Book Prize committee.
