With the support of a grant from the Center for Cultural Landscapes, Dr. Christina Proenza-Coles (American Studies, UVA) undertook research comparing public conversations and memorialization surrounding slavery and freedom in Curaçao, Cartagena, and Charlottesville. Her work has resulted in a video about how these African diaspora communities memorialize their complex histories in public spaces. You can watch the video and read a full summary of Dr. Proenza-Coles’ research here.
